SUMMARY CV OF RICHARD BAILEY Pr. Eng. Richard graduated from Wits University with a BSc in Civil Engineering and spent four years doing concrete, steel and timber design at the Department of Public Works, and registering as a professional engineer. He then joined the CSIR in the Timber Engineering section undertaking roof failure investigations, timber grading research and general timber research. He alsoattended two World Timber Engineering Conferences during this time. During his time at the CSIR he completed a Masters degree in Business and Technology at MIT (Massachusetts Institute for Technology) in Boston USA. After leaving the CSIR he became the Technical Director for International Truss Systems for two and a half years and then ran his own timber roof erection company for a year and a half. During this time he travelled to Japan at SALMA’s (South African Lumber Millers Association) request to represent the South African timber industry on the Timber Engineering technical committee of the International Standards Committee (ISO). He then joined MiTek where he set-up the Ultra-Span steel truss division. During this time he became the National Engineering Manager for MiTek. He has served for many years on the technical engineering committees for both the ITC (Institute for Timber Construction) in timber, and SASFA (South African Steel Frame Association) in steel. He now operates as a structural consultant specializing in both timber and light steel roof construction.
